The Pan African Film Fest is Happening Now!
The 2013 Pan African Film Festival kicked off its 21st showcase on February 7th with an array of premieres, screenings of over 150 films, insightful panels – and the excitement of the opening night festivities. The Africa Channel cameras were right there on the red carpet, interviewing the celebs and capturing all the excitement! Opening night marked the premiere of Forest Whitaker’s new film, Vipaka, also starring Sanaa Lathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Anthony Mackie, and Mike Epps.
Attending the premiere, we caught up with Blair Underwood on the star-studded carpet, and he shared with us his thoughts about why The Pan African Film Festival is so important. “Sometimes if you want to stretch your creative muscle, you have to live in the independent world. The life-line of this film festival is independent film-making,” affirmed Underwood. We also spotted Jimmy Jean Louis, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Anne Marie-Johnson, and Academy Award nominee Reginald Hudlin. When we asked the Django Unchained producer about the purpose behind the film, he said, “Slavery is a huge story and I want to tell the story of people who fought back.”
The festivities will carry on till February 18th at the Rave Cinemas Baldwin Hills in Los Angeles, CA.
