Mirinda Takes Over Miss Uganda 2015

The search for Miss Uganda 2015 was launched on Friday evening at Kampala Serena Hotel with Crown Beverages Limited under its Mirinda brand seemingly taking over the pageant as the main sponsors from last year’s Namunkekera Rural Industrial Centre (NRIC), an agricultural institute.

Although Brenda Nanyonjo, the pageant’s licence holder, insists there is still connection with the agricultural institute, the fact that NRIC was not represented at the launch spoke volumes of where everything was headed this year.

The pageant took a different ball game last year when contestants were gauged more for their agricultural knowledge and abilities than the customary runway attributes.

At the low-key affair on Friday, Nanyonjo, the first licence holder to run the pageant for five years, said the search will traverse the country, as used to be, with the first stop being May 30 in Gulu.

Then they will follow up with searches in Mbarara, Jinja and then Kampala. The crowning will be on July 10 at Kampala Serena Hotel.

She also revealed that the chosen contestants will still indulge a little bit in agricultural works for them to qualify as Uganda’s next beauty queen. But, not so much of it as last year.

“You cannot do something for only one year and think you have achieved it. We took a different direction last year and got our girls in agriculture which earned us massive mileage worldwide. That is a project we cannot just abandon after a year.

“However, as organisers, we promise to get people the best of Miss Uganda pageant again as we have always done and since so many sponsors have come on board, and we still expect more, this will be another good year of Miss Uganda beauty pageant,” Nanyonjo said.

Reigning Miss Uganda Leah Kalanguka was missing at the launch, she is abroad, but former beauty queens Sylvia Namutebi (2011/12) Phiona Bizzu (2012/13) and Stella Nantumbwe (2013/14) were present to endorse the pageant.

“I know for sure that Nanyonjo and her team will get another beautiful queen to represent Uganda in next year’s Miss World pageant,” said Nantumbwe.
