Hiplife at the Apollo
“What can you say? It’s Africa time!” the legendary music promoter Sparkie Martin remarked on Saturday evening, as he surveyed a modest crowd lining up outside the Apollo Theater for an evening of Ghanaian and Nigerian acts sharing the bill with the hiplife superstar Sarkodie.
Though the show was set to start at 8 o’clock, the first act had yet to take the stage an hour later, and a steady stream of patrons accustomed to dilatory start times continued casually to saunter in throughout the evening.
The men who attended the show were conservatively natty in a style that may be termed business casual, Ghana style.
