As part of its plans to help grow women’s football in the region, COSAFA will next year introduce a women’s tournament.  According to COSAFA president Suketu Patel, the tournament meant to begin a process of nurturing women’s soccer, will take place in March. He explained that Zambia would be among the teams that will participate in the inaugural event. “There will be a women’s tournament in Seychelles next March, how about that? I do not remember the definite date but it’s definitely in March. Zambia should choose its best team and participate,” Patel said. And Patel said he was happy with the level of officiating at the just-ended COSAFA Challenge. He noted that following the refereeing refresher course held prior to the tournament, the event has not had any controversy. Namibia faced Mozambique in yesterday’s final, and Patel said he was happy with the progression of the smaller teams in the region. “The tournament has been full of surprises, we did not expect this line-up in the final or in the plate. This is an indication of how the zone is moving; to see the smaller nations catching up to the bigger ones is a very positive thing not only to those country but also even to us as a zone. Strengthening of smaller countries will in turn strengthen the bigger ones and take the tournament seriously. I am generally happy, I am proud of our achievements. The core purpose of COSAFA is to develop the zone through hosting high level competitions. I would like to say this is a high level competition,” said Patel. – See more at:
