Our friends at Shadow & Act recently tipped us off to a new style documentary project about the worldwide rise of “black dandyism.” Directed by Ariel Wizman and Laurent Lunetta, the 55-minute Black Dandy aired this week on France’s Canal+. According to Shadow & Act, “the filmmakers say that they want to pay tribute to the men who fight against the stigma that sometimes comes with being a man who pays very special attention to his appearance, his style, adding that, ‘The idea was to restore dignity to a global African culture and find a certain conception of independence vis-à-vis white-black codes.’” Though we’re still waiting to see the film in full, a short teaser reveals interviews and appearances by a who’s-who of the dapper street style circuit, including Wanda Lephoto and Kabelo Kungwane of Johannesburg style duo The Sartists, Sam Lambert and Shaka Maidoh of Art Comes First, Street Etiquette‘s Joshua Kissi and Travis Gumbs, and British-Ghanaian designer Ozwald Boateng, to name just a few. Read more on Black Dandy via Shadow & Act, and stay tuned for news on when the film becomes available to stream outside of France. Until then, watch a trailer below…
