The Real Lord of the Flies: Swimming with Pigs…

I am often traveling to remote islands to enjoy sparkling white sands, bathtub warm waters and attendants serving tropical drinks, so I was a bit hesitant about visiting the infamous Pig Beach. The uninhabited island of Big Major Cay is an easy one hour flight from Miami, in the Exuma Cays of the Bahamas. The swimming pigs join the vast selection of unique activities popular with visitors to The Bahamas, but this was far from luxury and more of a fun over the top day trip adventure.

The tribes of enormous pigs have become popular with knowledgeable adventure travelers. They live freely on the sandy beaches, and after baking in the sun for hours, they swim in the warm waters, surfing in the waves alongside eager visitors. The feral pigs are totally approachable and safe, their friendly demeanor has them running out to greet you from under the shade of the palm trees. With an abundance of visitors from yachts and cruises, these are fat and happy pork bellies.
