5 Recipes for the Perfect Summer of Braai Cocktail!

As we inch toward the close of summer in the U.S., we want to make sure that your last “Summer of Braai 2015” days are enjoyed to the fullest. And not that you need alcohol to enjoy them, but it helps right!?

We searched the web for diverse, yet flavorful cocktail recipes and found some of the best! These five delicious cocktails from countries around Africa and the Diaspora are a great way to savor the flavor of Summer 2015.


1. Cuban Mojito (Cuba) 


1 teaspoon powdered sugar

Juice from one lime (2 ounces)

4 mint leaves

1 spring of mint

Havana Club White Rum

2 ounces club soda

2. Planter’s Punch (Jamaica)


1/2 oz sugar syrup*

2 oz. dark Jamaican rum

1/2 tsp. grenadine

1/2 tsp. falernum

2 dashes Angostura bitters

3. The Dawa (Kenya)


1 tbsp granulated sugar

2 shots of vodka

1 lime

A handful of crushed ice cubes

1 dawa stick covered in honey

4. Black and Stormy (Barbados)


1 ½ ounces of Gosling’s Black Seal Rum

Ginger Beer

Lime wedge

Put ice in a highball glass. Add rum. Fill with ginger beer to taste. Garnish with lime wedge
