World Aids Day: Caribbean Official Calls for End to Stigma, Discrimination
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary General, Irwin La Rocque is calling for an end to stigma and discrimination against persons with the HIV/AIDS virus.
In a message marking World AIDS Day on Sunday, La Rocque said that Caribbean countries should seek to “’close the gap’’ and “resolve, to accelerate treatment so that we leave no one behind”.
He said the regional countries should also emphasise prevention, thereby reducing prevalence; and to stamp out HIV and AIDS-related stigma and discrimination as recognition that social justice and human rights are values that apply to all.
La Rocque said that not long ago any one with HIV and AIDS virus was literally given a death sentence.
