Weinstein Company Acquires Idris Elba’s Mandela Biopic
Is there already a potential 2014 Oscar-contender? The Weinstein Company, the distribution company behind 2013 Oscar-winning films Django Unchained and Silver Linings Playbook, recently acquired the North American, Australian and New Zealand distribution rights to Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom, according to Mike Fleming Jr. of Deadline.com. The biopic, directed by The First Grader’s Justin Chadwick, stars Idris Elba as Mandela and Bond-girl Naomie Harris as his wife, Winnie. The film was shot over the course of five months on location in Cape Town, Johannesburg and the Eastern Cape.
Set for a December 19th release date, the movie follows a string of films made about South Africa’s civil rights leader, including Winnie (Terrence Howard and Jennifer Hudson), Invictus (Morgan Freeman), Mandela and de Klerk (Sidney Poitier), and Mandela (Danny Glover).
The Africa Channel had the opportunity to interview Naomie and Justin for Filmmakers: The First Grader.
