Durban lifeguards take action at the height of the holiday season when 2 million visitors flock to the waters edge.

  • Season 1 | Episode 10 
    Busiest day of the year
    It’s New Year’s Day and the blue bottles are back en masse, stinging bathers without mercy. The lifeguards close the beaches early but score of revelers refuse to get out of the water.   A fight breaks out, pitting the lifeguards against the public.
  • Season 1 | Episode 9 
    Power craft
    New Year’s Eve brings some of the biggest waves of the season.  A lifeguard accidentally flips a rescue boat.  Three Korean tourists lose control of their canoe close to the shark nets.   Then an even more disturbing call comes over the radio:  A women has thrown her 5 year old off the pier.
  • Season 1 | Episode 8 
    Mass Rescue
    A lifeguard’s worst nightmare occurs at The Wedge when a flash rip tide sweeps 150 bathers into treacherous waters.  Most of them can’t swim and the lifeguards are vastly outnumbered.
  • Season 1 | Episode 7 
    African Christmas
    Christmas Day arrives and with it, an onslaught of blue bottles (jellyfish-like creatures) stinging bathers in the water and on the sands of Country Club and Battery Beach.

    Shark Attack
    Panic rises on the Durban beaches when 5 bathers are bitten by unidentified sea creatures. The lifeguards try to maintain calm and safety while confronting their own fears about sharks.
  • Season 1 | Episode 5 
    Missing persons
    A land and sea patrol is organized to find a man reported missing and presumed lost at sea. A storm moves in, causing lightning on water – a lethal combination for bathers.  All beaches are closed, but the lifeguards still have to chase out recalcitrant visitors.
  • Season 1 | Episode 4 
    Day of Reconciliation
    December 16th, South Africa’s official day commemorating the end of apartheid, starts the holiday season.  The lifeguards deal with fights, booze and sexual harassment in the crowd.   Then an unconscious woman pulled from the waters goes into seizures.
  • Season 1 | Episode 3 
    Most Dangerous Beach
    Luthuli and his “Men of Steel” work The Wedge, Durban’s most dangerous beach due to rip currents and unstable sand.  The holiday crowds add to the risks.
  • Season 1 | Episode 2 
    Ragers Start the Party
    Teen party animals known as “ragers” celebrate their high school graduation on Uhmlanga Beach, creating even more headaches for the lifeguards.
  • Season 1 | Episode 1 
    The festive season kicks off
    Benni rescues a grateful British tourist while Sihle deals with an obnoxious swimmer who refuses to stay within the safety zone.   Penny competes against the men in the lifeguards’ swim-run endurance test and frets over a tactical mistake.
