Big Brother Africa - The Inaugural Season **Special Encore Presentation**

12 housemates from 12 different African countries. Under one roof. For 106 days. Let the drama and catfights begin! Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe are represented in this acclaimed and highly unique version of the popular international television format. SHOW HISTORY: On Sunday, May 25th, 2003, an important chapter was written in the history of broadcast television on the African continent. On that day audiences in 42 African countries watched as twelve contestants entered the Big Brother house, located in Johannesburg, South Africa. Viewers would soon discover that this version of the popular reality series was to be different from any version of Big Brother that they had ever seen before. For the first time ever in the history of this worldwide television franchise these twelve strangers did not share a common nationality, a common cultural heritage or a common native tongue. The one bond that they did share however was a powerful one indeed. They were born on African soil. Television coverage was provided by M-Net and DStv . The series was also broadcast throughout the continent by 25 free-to-air broadcasters in 9 countries, reaching an estimated audience of 30 million viewers. For viewers, the show was revolutionary. Big Brother Africa provided a daily window into the cultures and lifestyles of their 'neighbors' and in doing so, broke through barriers, changed perceptions and built a bridge of understanding among the participating African nations. Media coverage across the continent and throughout the world was massive, including inserts on CNN, Reuters and BBC World and features in Time Magazine, Newsweek, The Washington Post and The New York Times. The series garnered more than 500,000 SMS messages through 12 different mobile operator partners and its website registered over 140000 visitors including the UK, France, Canada and Pakistan. The overwhelming success of Big Brother Africa played a key role in the Big Brother format being voted International Television Format of the Year at the 43rd Monte Carlo Television Festival. It is with great pride that The Africa Channel presents this encore presentation of a groundbreaking television event...the inaugural season of Big Brother Africa.
