Migration of Beauty

AN AFRICA CHANNEL EXCLUSIVE!
In May 2005, the ruling Ethiopian Revolutionary Patriot’s Democratic Front won elections amid allegations of electoral fraud and a campaign of intimidation against opposition groups. Nearly 200 civilians were killed and tens of thousands arrested, including high profile opposition leader Birtukan Mideksa. The former judge and popular politician was initially jailed for life, then pardoned, and then commanded to serve out the rest of her sentence. Ethiopians will go to the polls again on May 23, 2010, and the political maneuvering is already underway.

The Africa Channel Presents: 'Dole'

Libreville, the capital city of Gabon, provides the backdrop for this taut drama focusing on four street kids who scrape together a living as a gang while struggling to hold on to their dreams. Mougler, the unwilling hero of this story, finds his life hard to bear, between an ailing mother and an absent, alcoholic father. When his mother’s health worsens, he decides to encourage the gang to raid a cash game kiosk. Jury prize winner at Cannes Junior (2000) and Carthage (2000). In French with English subtitles. Best Screenplay, Ouagadou Pan African Film Festival. (92 mins.) Provides a rare peek into life in Gabon's capital, Libreville. This likeable first directing effort by Imunga Ivanga has a laid-back authenticity missing from more dramatized tales of African youth." Variety "Dôlè is a droll film that knows how to turn the tragic into candid satire. In the director's hands the narrative often takes on the demeanor of a documentary." Libération "African cinema is moving into cities and rejuvenating its characters. Between high school and delinquency, rap and dysfunctional families, we recognize familiar figures and situations...The director hits the right spot." Le Monde "Pure and abrasive like everything produced with real modesty." Le Figaro

The Africa Channel Presents: Karmen Gei

A gorgeous, exotically conceived reinterpretation of Georges Bizet's classic opera 'Carmen.' set in modern-day Dakar, Senegal on the coast of West Africa and the first black Carmen on film since Dorothy Dandridge starred in Otto Preminger's CARMEN JONES. KARMEN GEI has been compared to BLACK ORPHEUS --every scene bursting with volcanic dancing, vivid costumes and sets that nearly pulsate to the dancers' rhythms. The film stars two charismatic, statuesque beauties: Djeinaba Diop Gai as Karmen and Stephanie Biddle as Angelique, the warden of a women's prison where Karmen is initially held. It sticks closely to the story of a free-spirit who seduces all who come into contact with her until she reaches her inevitable tragic end. "Vividly Alive With Visual, Sonic and Performance Energy. A Saucy, Colorful Delight!" VARIETY "Here is one of most beautiful modern presentations of the Carmen myth, reconstructed with a new setting, contemporary Senegal. An enchanting set, African music and dance, colorful scenes and costumes are woven together in a mesmerizing rhythm and cinematography." LE FIGARO “ Weaves a spell … The music transforms the story into something free and graceful. LIBERATION

The Africa Channel Presents: Pieces D Identities
