Get to Know “Taste of Soul” Host: Sam Sarpong

November 22, 2012

Who is Sam Sarpong? He is an actor, international super-model, and the energetic host for The Africa Channel’s latest special, “Taste of Soul.”  Sam’s favorite Ghanaian dish is kenkey and shito (ground-fermented corn and spicy peppery sauce). Normally, it’s accompanied with fried fish, but we won’t hold it against him.

Born in the UK to Ghanaian parents, Sam embraces his multi-cultural upbringing. “I lived in Ghana from age 4-7 and still have family there,” details Sarpong.  After moving to the States and becoming an ‘All-American’ high school basketball player, Sam embarked on a different path than one expected by his parents.  Like most African parents, they wanted him to go into the medical field.  Job security and prestige?  Forget it.  Despite excelling at sciences, Sam started pursuing acting. Before long, he was booking parts on TV shows like My So Called Life with Claire Danes, Family Matters, and Dangerous Minds.

It was on Dangerous Minds where he was spotted by fashion designer, Tommy Hilfiger, and the rest is history. A six year campaign skyrocketed Sarpong to supermodel fame as he continued to make strides in his acting career with credits on NCIS, The District, and Cold Case.

Despite his success, Sam is still Sam – down to earth, charismatic, and always up for a good laugh. So naturally we couldn’t think of a better host for“Taste of Soul.” We captured Mr. Sarpong in action at the 7th Annual event on October 20th. From interviewing celebrities to dancing with attendees, Sam did it all. He even tried to eat a larger-than-life turkey leg!

Don’t miss your chance for a “Taste of Soul!”
