Celebrate Continental Solidarity on Africa Day 2015: Zuma
Africa Day 2015 marks the celebration of 21 years since the country’s reintegration into the Organisation of African Unity (OAU)‚ the African Union (AU) and the international community‚ the Presidency said.
President Jacob Zuma will lead the country’s inaugural Africa Day celebrations on Sunday in Mamelodi.
“Africa Day provides an opportunity for us to celebrate our African identity. Our country was isolated for decades from the rest of the continent due to the evil system of apartheid colonialism‚” said Zuma.
“We are now a full member of the African continent‚ and since 1994‚ our continent is correctly the primary focus of our foreign policy. We call upon all our people to mark AfricaDay2015 in various ways by celebrating South Africa’s unique diversity and the country’s rich culture and traditions.”
Africa Day marks the formation of the OAU on May 25‚ 1963. It was replaced by the AU on May 26‚ 2001‚ but only launched in July the next year in SA by then-chairman Thabo Mbeki.
