Caribbean Culture Highlighted at Upcoming Mass Carnival
One of the Caribbean’s most cherished traditions – carnival – comes to Springfield in all its Technicolor glory on Saturday with everything you would expect to see and do at the island’s Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, where the popular cultural fest is believed to have begun.
The highlight of cultural event will be a costumed parade and carnival extravaganza featuring bands of masqueraders decked out in flamboyant costumes, colorful floats and other revelers, including special guests in the line of march, such as elected officials.
“The carnival and parade is a way for us to celebrate our heritage and to bring all Caribbean people living in the local community together. It’s an opportunity for others to come and party with us and to learn who we are, where we are from, how we dress, what we like to eat, and what kind of music we love,” said Gloria Scarlett of the Springfield Carnival Association, organizers of the event.
